Environment and sustainability

At Oberwaid – Kurhotel & Private Clinic, we take our responsibilities towards our hotel guests, patients, employees and the community in which we live and work very seriously. Oberwaid AG pledges to implement corporate social responsibility. Oberwaid AG also realizes the importance of sustainable development and minimizing harm to the environment. Oberwaid management meets its commitment to the environment by measures whose utmost priority is to reduce our environmental impact. The list below describes various construction standards, measures and processes which have already been implemented and are subject to continuous optimization and improvement.

The shell of the building:

  • Insulation in compliance with “Minergie” (Swiss low-energy construction label) standards
  • Triple glazing for added efficiency
  • Insulation in summer through exterior architectural design features (wrap-around balconies)
  • Flat roof with extensive greenery and rainwater retention
  • Large interior glazed areas and skylights for optimum utilization of daylight and reduced use of artificial lighting

Electrical installations:

  • Energy consumption for lighting is reduced through maximum utilization of daylight
  • Efficient programmable control of devices and lighting minimizes energy use
  • Most of the lighting systems are LED-based, facilitating long life and low energy consumption

Heating and air conditioning:

  • Optimized building envelope with energy gain in winter through glazing and shading in the summer
  • Heating system uses geothermal heat pumps to extract environmental heat from the ground
    (42 pipes covering 152 metres and 34 pipes covering 250 metres, giving a total of 30 kilometres)
  • Top-up heat with natural gas as needed, with minimum carbon emissions
  • Cooling provided by direct utilization of cooling energy from the ground (double utilization of geothermal energy pipes)
  • Top-up cooling using chillers as required
  • Environmental heat in the summer is returned to the pipes in the ground by means of a regeneration system


  • Rather than conventional air conditioning, each room has its own health-friendly forced-air cooling system and all our medical facilities are equipped with a chilled ceiling system
  • Ventilation systems with optimized recovery and utilization of waste heat
  • On-demand ventilation system operation based on state-of-the-art control technology
  • Energy-efficient components


  • Hot water supply from use of heat recovery from industrial cooling (kitchens), geothermal heat and natural gas. Water is preheated using heat recovered from kitchen exhaust air. The preheated water is then heated to 60°C using a heat pump (pipes in the ground). If the geothermal heat is not sufficient, a gas boiler guarantees a constant supply of 60° C hot water
  • Hot water distribution system with periodic disinfection for control of legionella bacteria
  • The entire hot water distribution network is heated weekly to above 70° C to disinfect all the pipes
  • All kitchen wastewater is pumped through an automatic grease separator. A disposal vehicle extracts the collected grease and takes it to a sewage treatment plant, which prevents greasy wastewater from entering the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Washing machines have a hot water feed to save on water heating costs

Additional features:

  •  Exterior cleaning without chemicals (water-fed pole system)
  • Food waste and peelings are converted to biomass in a BioTrans system, stored in a tank and transported to a biogas plant in a disposal vehicle, enabling the waste to be used to generate energy and support the environment
  • Grass clippings are used for biogas
